There's an underlying fearlessness about this album that must be appreciated. Lyrically, Greg Carlin has strayed from the regular Z&G path down a dark alley, but definitely not in the wrong direction. While sonically, the band have streamlined their outfit to just three members (Greg, Alan Shenton and Mike Wright) who together, still maintain that signature Z&G sound. And, although the album may be criticized for being far darker than its predecessors, it's the sheer musicality and excellent composition of each track that brings it into the light.
The album opens with the mysterious All I Gave that gradually feeds into a full length version of considerably boundary pushing lyrics "I wrote the book on how to give a fuck and fuck you too". I'll Blame You is the first single off the album followed by My Best a track that I reckon will get good air play.
Sons is clearly a story all on it's own that may or may not have a deeper meaning and while I was completely blown away by the chaos of guitar hooks in Sick, You're nothing to me and Denied it's the intensity of Little Black Book that did if for me – definitely my favorite track of all.
Tracks like Yesterday and Fire are almost sinister love songs with a bitter undertone but are still relatable and definitely highlights the way in which the bands sound has matured.
Over all, it's an album laced with emotionally charged lyrics that are somewhat raw, but honest and profound in the best of places. Im really excited to see what this will do for the progression of the band.
Collected Memories was a good album, so good it won a SAMA. Then there was The Inside, but, with initial success comes expectation. I'm of the opinion that The Wisest Ones has not only met my expectations but is undoubtedly their best work and most likely the album that will see Z&G breach international territory – and possibly another award.
The band is doing a national album tour this month, go HERE to check the tour dates.
