“Stellenbosch! Fok ya!”, screamed frontman Francois van Coke down the microphone. The crowd responded with a resounding “Fok ya!” Tuesday 23, September saw South African rock royalty Fokofpolisiekar, take to the Klein Libertas Teater outdoor stage and rock everything to its core.
This was the final stop on the band’s Bose Kringloop tour – a celebratory tour in honour of their debut album, Lugsteuring. The album was released in 2004 and of course this milestone was not going to go by without a fuss. And celebrate they did! Fortunately the newly renovated venue was able to accommodate a record attendance of 1600+ people – all belting their hearts out to every song.
The five-piece outfit was completed with legendary guitarist Johnny de Ridder by their side. As promised, the set was a trip down memory lane with cult classics such as ‘Vernietig Jouself’, ‘Brand Suid Afrika’, and ‘Hemel Op Die Platteland’ as well as newer hits ‘Antibiotika’, ‘Dagdronk’ and ‘Paranoia’. Each member of the band is a legend in their own right and lead singer Francois Van Coke has an unwavering ability to enthrall and connect to each member of the crowd and forge a bond so strong you can’t help but lose yourself to the brilliance that is Fokofpolisiekar.
Overall, there’s no better place I could have spent the eve of a public holiday than celebrating the success of a long-standing South African band. It is amazing to see how after more than 10 years on the scene, despite not touring as regularly as they once did, Fokof are still able fill a venue and even more so on a night when Cape Town is a buzz with countless other events.
Here’s to the next 10 years, more albums and more ROCK AND ROLL!
