Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong seeks substance abuse treatment after losing his sh*t and smashing guitar on stage
One does not simply take away twenty minutes from a Green Day set – unless one seeks the wrath of an intoxicated Billie Joe Armstrong.
It has been reported that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong will be seeking treatment for substance abuse, this in the wake of the profanity-laden tirade he unleashed on event organizers at the iHeart Music Festival in Las Vegas on Friday. While original reports claimed that the event got off to a late start and organizers thought it fit to cut Green Day's set from forty-five minutes down to twenty-five to allow Usher more time to perform, an apology issued on the bands Facebook page states that their slot was not cut short. Apparently BJA caught sight of the monitor alerting the band that they had one minute to wrap up their set (ironically in the middle of them playing Basket Case), and well…BJA went bat-shit crazy.
He took Justin Bieber (who wasn't even there), Usher and his guitar down with him – "I'm not f–king Justin Bieber, you motherf–kers", he added before smashing his guitar and storming off stage. The whole thing seemed pretty punk rock, that is until I looked at the event lineup – Lil Wayne, Taylor Swift, Pink, Usher, Rihanna (to name a few), not very punk if you ask me.
This doesn't come as much of a surprise as BJA has admitted to being drunk whilst performing on a number of occasions and although it is not clear what sort of substance abuse treatment he is seeking, the entire debacle could have come at a much better time for the band. Green Day are set to release the first of their trilogy of albums !UNO!, !DOS! and !TRE!! on Tuesday 25 September – yip tomorrow. The latter are set to be released on 13 November 2012 and 15 January 2013, respectively. This is the bands first release since their 2009 21st Century Breakdown.
Anyway, this is what happens when you piss off an intoxicated Billie Joe Armstrong…
Green Day will be back. Probably not at the iHeart Music Festival but they'll be back.
Here is the official statement released on the bands Facebook page:
"Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse. We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances."
PS: Guitar for sale: needs some work…
