Alt-indie trio Shout Hey! is Timothy Kohler, Matt Pratt and Brogan Muir. Their latest single “Word of Mouth” was released earlier this year, shortly followed by their Oppikoppi debut. The single follows on from their debut EP, Can You Hear Me? and is featured on this month’s playlist, so it’s only right that we have a little Q&A to find out more about the trio of 19-year-olds.
Some history as to where and how it all started and how long you guys have been performing together?
The band was started in the later years of high school. We all went to the same school in Johannesburg and have played together in various musical ensembles, so the fact that we were very familiar with each other in music and personality was definitely something to our advantage. Now, the band has been going for just over 2 years. I distinctly remember having our first band practice formally as Shout Hey! The day Blink-182 released “Up All Night“, the first single after their long hiatus.
You are quite young, average age between the three of you?
We’re all 19.
You were super excited to make your Oppikoppi debut this year, what was the experience like?
It was such a privilege and honour for us to be performing at one of South Africa’s most prestigious festivals. When we were confirmed to perform, it never really hit us until a few days prior to the festival. It was huge to take in, but it definitely stands as a milestone in our careers, we’ll never forget that show. To have an abundance of family, friends, fans and unfamiliars from all over the country right in front of us was overwhelming, and we couldn’t thank everyone enough for their support.
Which South African artists do you aspire to?
Al Bairre, The Plastics, Beach Party, Shortstraw, Chantel Van T, Bye Beneco, Wrestlerish, Dear Reader, Touchwood and The December Streets to name a few!
How do you feel about being called a South African One Direction?
Haha! That was only once! Or has it been going around more than we know? We’re not too sure how we feel about that. Do they have seductive dance moves?
What’s the craziest thing that happened on your launch tour for the “Can You Hear Me?” EP?
Craziest? I’m not too sure. But waking Matt up in the mornings is definitely the first thing that comes to mind. Regardless, he does have bloody fantastic hair.
You’re very open about the fact that “She’s Crazy” is about Tim’s ex-girlfriend. Is she crazy?
Haha! You were obviously at the Oppi show! It’s quite serendipidous to be honest. Because in a way, she commissioned the song while they were still dating. ‘Write a song about me!’, so we wrote a damn song about her called ‘She’s Crazy’. She loved it, so we put it on record, we released it, we filmed a damn music video for it. A couple weeks later, they break up, very ugly break up, and the song has remained a crowd favourite.
When can we expect a full-length album?
We’ve been meaning to get onto our debut LP. It’s difficult for us due to our particular circumstances – we don’t all live in the same part of the country. But when we are together, we also make an effort to push studio time. At the moment, it looks like we’ll be releasing another EP in the beginning of next year.
If aliens were to land in South Africa, who would you nominate as an ambassador for the human race?
Sir Thomas Matthew DeLonge. He would know exactly what to do. Any Blink fan will know that!
