Anna Karenina is a film that was recently released, however, it is a remake of older films and based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel from 1877.
I went to watch it because the slogan said “An epic love story” and I think Kiera Knightley is pretty. So being a girl, it sounded right up my alley. Boy, was I wrong.
The movie is based in the old, strict, Russian times where many things were shunned. A brief outline without spoiling anything would be that Prince Stiva Oblonsky cheats on his wife with his children’s governess. His sister (Knightley) travels to him to attempt getting them back together. Upon her arrival she meets a man that tempts her to cheat on her husband and risk her entire life, including losing her son for him.
The movie itself was done very well, including the acting and costumes, they won an Oscar after all. However… The story line is so bleak.
I changed my mind, I will spoil it for you guys. Everyone dies. And not in a dramatic way that makes you cry, more in a -‘why the heck did they just do that??’-way. Also, the russian names made it a bit difficult to follow the story initially. Oblonsky, Vronsky, Karenin- what???
BUT, if you are a fan of stories that go that way, you may as well watch it, it was portrayed very well. The light reflected in such a way to make you feel passionate when they were passionate and cold when they were angry. It took you back and set the scene to tell you a story.
Almost the entire film was set in a theatre with some clever camera tricks. It was done well despite the depressing storyline.
Production gets a whopping 7, and the story line a 4. So let’s round it off to a very average 5.5 rating.
