Earlier this year, The Kooks announced that they will be releasing a new album titled Listen on 1 September. This will be the band’s fourth studio album and is being produced by frontman Luke Pritchard and hip-hop producer Inflo. Earlier today, the band gave us another taste of what to expect from the upcoming album when they released “Forgive and Forget“.
In April this year, the band released a track from the album titled “Down“, a few months later they released another single and music video for “Around Town“- both tracks were received with mixed reactions. Some fans felt that the latest tracks are too different from the bands earlier work, others appreciated the change saying “it’s boring to expect the same sound album after album”.
From the sounds of it, the band themselves were bored with their old sound, Luke Pritchard said: “To me this album is about pure expression. Even the way we made the album felt fresh. Rather than us just being a band in a room, playing our guitars with the vocal over the top, which is what we’d always done before, we were really listening to what was going on around us, picking up ideas. The whole thing was much more natural.”
Not sure if the new funk-inspired sound will resonate well with fans of Konk and Junk of the Heart, or if fans should simply bury The Kooks of old and welcome a new band (barring two members), under the same name.
